Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill

This amazing story of African girl Aminata's escape from abduction, slavery and cruelty to become the doyenne of the abolitionist movement is a knock-out. Hill writes with a beautifully restrained lyricality, and creates a very compelling voice for this heroine who straddles multiple worlds and cultures. Historically, the novel is rich and fascinating, and takes the reader inside Aminata's experience of slavery with a depth that has, in my humble opinion, never before been achieved in English literature. Without a doubt, this is my book of the year!
